Walking to Class at VCU

Commute Guide

Walking to Class at VCU

What the trip from 321 W Grace Street to campus actually looks like, on foot, on a bike, on the Pulse and in a car. With the times, and the trade-offs.

No highway crossing No shuttle dependency No parking permit needed
The short answer

From Parc View at Commonwealth at 321 W Grace St, the VCU School of Business is about a 4 minute walk, Monroe Park about 6, James Branch Cabell Library about 10, Cary Street Gym about 11 and the Siegel Center about 14. The building sits inside the Monroe Park Campus footprint, so there is no highway to cross, no river crossing and no shuttle to wait for. The GRTC Pulse Arts District station is about 4 minutes away for trips beyond campus.

The Walk

What the Route Is

Grace Street runs east to west directly through VCU's Monroe Park Campus. Parc View sits on it. That single fact explains most of the commute: you leave the building, turn west, and you are walking through campus within a block or two.

The campus core is arranged along Grace, Franklin and Main Streets between roughly Belvidere and Foushee. Academic buildings, the library, the student commons and the gym are distributed across that grid. Nothing about the trip requires crossing an interstate, a rail line or the river, and nothing requires a shuttle connection. It is a city sidewalk walk on short blocks with signalized crossings.

The practical difference between a 4 minute walk and a 20 minute one shows up in the margins of a schedule. A gap between classes becomes usable. A forgotten laptop is recoverable. An 8 a.m. costs you a few minutes of sleep rather than half an hour. Those margins are the actual product of living on campus rather than near it.

Biking

When a Bike Is Worth It

For the Monroe Park Campus, a bike saves a few minutes at best. Everything is close enough that walking is usually simpler than locking up.

A bike earns its keep on the longer trips. The VCU Medical Center and health sciences campus east of downtown is about 7 minutes by bike versus roughly 24 on foot. Groceries on North Lombardy are about 6 minutes by bike versus 19 walking, and the difference matters when you are carrying bags. Brown's Island and the riverfront trails are about 7 minutes. Carytown and Scott's Addition are roughly 16.

Parc View includes secure bicycle storage and bike racks on site, which is the part most buildings get wrong. Storage that is actually secure is the difference between owning a bike for four years and owning one for one.

Transit

The Pulse and GRTC

The GRTC Pulse is Richmond's bus rapid transit line, running along Broad Street between Rocketts Landing in the east and Willow Lawn in the west. The Arts District station is roughly a 4 minute walk from the building, which is closer than most residents' parking spaces would be.

The Pulse is most useful for the trips that are too far to walk and too annoying to drive: Scott's Addition, the arts district, downtown, and the stretch of Broad Street west toward Willow Lawn. GRTC local routes also serve Broad Street and the surrounding grid for destinations the Pulse does not reach.

VCU has historically offered transit arrangements for students through Parking and Transportation, and the specifics change year to year. Check current pass programs and fare arrangements with VCU directly rather than relying on what a previous resident paid.

University Services

What VCU Runs

VCU operates several transportation programs through Parking and Transportation that are worth knowing about before you decide how you will get around.

RamSafe

Evening point-to-point

A free point-to-point evening transportation service for VCU students, faculty and staff, operating 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., 365 days a year, on the Monroe Park and MCV campuses.

Rides are requested through the Ride Pingo app or by calling 804-828-SAFE. RamSafe serves defined boundaries that include on-campus locations and nearby residences, so check VCU's published service area map for the current boundary.

RamXpress

Between campuses

A point-to-point shuttle between the Monroe Park and MCV campuses. Useful for students with coursework, labs or clinical placements split across both campuses.

Biking the same trip takes roughly 7 minutes from 321 W Grace St, so the shuttle is mainly a weather and schedule convenience.

RAMSWay

Campus route network

A designated route connecting classroom buildings, gyms, libraries, residence halls and parking decks across the Monroe Park Campus.

Worth looking at when you are planning a regular walking route to class, since it links the major campus destinations along a consistent path.

Details, hours and service areas for all three are published by VCU Parking and Transportation and change periodically. Confirm current information with VCU.

Driving

If You Keep a Car

A car is not necessary for class from this address, which is the point of the location. It is useful for grocery runs, trips home, internships and clinical placements outside the city, and anything that involves carrying more than a backpack.

Parc View has on-site garage parking in two forms: assigned tandem spaces and unassigned spaces, both at a monthly charge. Tandem means two cars share a stall front to back. Parking is limited relative to the building's 509 beds, so raise it early in the leasing process rather than at move-in. Current rates are on the fees page.

Parking on campus is a separate question. VCU sells permits for its decks and lots through Parking and Transportation, with rates and eligibility that change by year and by permit type. Students who park on campus daily should price that alongside a garage space here, since paying for both is a common and avoidable expense.

Walking

About 4 minutes to the VCU School of Business, 6 to Monroe Park, 10 to James Branch Cabell Library, 11 to Cary Street Gym and 14 to the Siegel Center. Parc View sits on Grace Street, which runs directly through the Monroe Park Campus, so the walk begins on campus rather than heading toward it. There is no highway, rail line or river crossing on the route.

Yes. The building is inside the Monroe Park Campus footprint, so walking is the default rather than the fallback. Most academic buildings, the library, the student commons and the campus gym sit on the Grace, Franklin and Main Street grid within a 15 minute walk. No shuttle connection is required and no parking permit is needed to attend class.

A 4 to 10 minute walk is manageable in most weather, which is the practical advantage of a short commute over a long one. For evenings, VCU operates RamSafe, a free point-to-point transportation service for students, faculty and staff running 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. year round within defined campus boundaries. Check VCU's published service area map for current coverage.

Bikes and Transit

Yes, secure bicycle storage and bike racks are on site. A bike saves little time for the Monroe Park Campus, where everything is already a short walk, but it changes the longer trips considerably: the VCU Medical Center drops from roughly 24 minutes on foot to about 7 by bike, and groceries on North Lombardy from about 19 minutes to about 6.

The GRTC Pulse Arts District station on West Broad Street is roughly a 4 minute walk from 321 W Grace St. The Pulse runs the length of Broad Street between Rocketts Landing and Willow Lawn, connecting downtown, the arts district, the VCU and VUU station and Scott's Addition. GRTC local routes also serve Broad Street.

VCU has historically offered transit arrangements for students through Parking and Transportation, and the specifics change year to year. Check current pass programs and fare arrangements directly with VCU rather than relying on older information. GRTC service and the Pulse both run along Broad Street, about 4 minutes from the building.

About 7 minutes by bike, roughly 24 minutes on foot, or a short drive. Confirm current RamXpress hours and stops with VCU Parking and Transportation.

No. Class, the library, the campus gym and Monroe Park are all inside a 15 minute walk, and the Pulse is about 4 minutes away. A car is most useful for grocery runs, trips home and commitments outside the city. Garage parking is available in assigned tandem and unassigned forms, both at a monthly charge, and is limited relative to 509 beds, so ask early. Current rates are on the fees page.

Price both before you commit to either. VCU sells permits for its campus decks and lots through Parking and Transportation, with rates and eligibility that change annually by permit type. Residents who walk to class often find a campus permit unnecessary. Paying for a garage space here and a campus permit at the same time is a common and avoidable expense.
